"The word of announcement must always be drenched in an intense life of prayer."

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, speaking at a Conference during the Jubilee of Catechists, 10th December 2000.

Prayer

"Pray...also for me, that utterance may be given me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the Gospel... that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak."

(St.Paul,Eph. 6:18-20)

What characterises the life of any true evangelist and evangelising community is that they are founded on prayer. If we look to the Gospels, Jesus is frequently described as withdrawing to a lonely place to pray. If we look to the Acts of the Apostles, the activities of the first followers of Jesus are soaked in prayer. None of our efforts to evangelise others will bear fruit, if, for want of another word, we go it alone.

The work of evangelisation is God's work. We are simply the tools and this requires us to practice being attentive to what the Holy Spirit is telling us, when we are talking to or helping someone or when we are alone. There is no replacement for taking time out and listening to and speaking with God. It is through these moments that we deepen profoundly our relationship with Him.

This section is designed to encourage you to pray. Whether you see yourself as a "pray-er" or a "do-er", please pray for the evangelisation work being done in England and Wales, please pray for those already engaged in evangelisation work as we speak, please pray for the Lord to open doors for you to witness to His love.

Pause for thought: When do you find you are best able to pray?
